Today the East and the West are in closer contact than ever before, not only politically and economically but culturally and philosophically as well. Moving beyond the cultural isolations and divisions of the past, human history is now literally merging into a single world history. New problems hitherto unknown are arising in thought and the forms of human life, posing new challenges for philosophy. Culturally conditioned, and yet seeking the universal truth which transcends cultural boundaries, philosophy must now embark on bold intellectual adventures for the common future of humankind.

I find it fitting that philosophers all over the world gather together for ˇ°Rethinking Philosophy Today,ˇ± which is the theme of the XXII World Congress of Philosophy. Through this intellectual feast we hope to renew reflections on the nature, scope, and function of philosophy in an increasingly multicultural, global, and techno-scientific age.

As the first Congress ever to be held in Asia, the XXII World Congress of Philosophy will put this critical reflection in the perspective of the cultural backdrop, philosophical traditions, interpretations, and identities specific to the Asian context. We hope that this focus will bring about a richer understanding that will pave the road for the integration of Eastern and Western perspectives. Furthermore, we hope that the international philosophical community has an opportunity, through this Congress and onwards, to share ideas and friendship.

You are all invited to participate in this grand occasion for the sharing of ideas, friendship, and culture in the hospitality that Korea has to offer.

Sincerely Yours,

Myung-Hyun Lee
President of the Korean Organizing Committee
